The Cause and Effect of HIV in Africa The ubiquitous acronym HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus. It is a virus that gradually weakens the immune system until the body cannot fight off common infinitesimal infections such as pneumonia, diarrhea, the â€Å"flu†, and other illnesses. All of which can be part of the Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome, the final stage of HIV that usually develops between 2 to 10 years after the infection. This infection is frequently transmitted through unprotected intercourse with someone who has already been affected with HIV and is an increasing problem in Africa. This study focuses mainly on the causes and effects of this virus in Africa. HIV is an ongoing battle in many different parts of the world, but it has not affected any other country as strongly and perniciously than in Africa. Out of the 3 million AIDS deaths worldwide, 2.2 million deaths have occurred in Africa. Although the condom is an effective way to prevent the infection of HIV, in many African societies, women are expected and taught to subordinate their own interest to those of their partners. Because of this, many African women feel powerless and give in to having sex for the fear that, if they refuse, they will be raped anyway. Results show that in most African countries, 40% of the young women in Kenya and in Cameroon are coerced or tricked into sexual intercourse. Since wife abuse is widespread, many women do not dare to bring up the topic of condoms for protection against HIV infection for the fear that they would be physically abused. (Women’s Status. Even in the 1960s the jungle remained terra incognita, an unknown land with the power to hold the technology of mechanized warfare beyond its periphery. And with good reason, Munro though. Elliot, never having been in a rainforest, was fascinated†¦ [skip to next page] Because Elliot had looked forward to his first experience of the equatorial African rain forest, he was surprised at how quickly he felt oppressed–and how soon he entertained thoughts of leaving again.Yet the tropical rain forests had spawned most new life forms, including man†¦. As he walked through the forest, Elliot found himself thinking of it as an enormous hot, dark womb, a place new species were nourished in unchanging conditions until they were ready to migrate out to the harsher and more variable temperate zones. –This passage has a couple competing ideas that illuminate the other tensions of Congo. Munro says that humans do n ot belong in the jungle and despite Elliot’s initial enthusiasm his later feeling of â€Å"oppression† puts him closer to Munro.But Elliot also thinks that the rain forest is where life comes from, including humans, a place free from the â€Å"technology of mechanized warfare† that destroys life without replacing it. So, if we read this together, humans owe a debt to the universal origin of life but are now cut off from it and feel it as a mysterious enemy. In a way, though, language lets us re-enter or re-connect with this origin of life through Amy and her connection to the world of gorillas and humans. Day 8 Chapter 4: But he know what Munro was saying.Inevitably, people who raised apes found at a certain point they could no longer keep them. With maturity the animals became too large, too powerful, too much their own species to be controllable. It was no longer possible to put them in diapers and pretend they were cute humanlike creatures. Their genes coded inevitable differences that ultimately became impossible to overlook. –This passage is interesting because it helps to explain some of the commentary elsewhere in the book about how humans are affecting the world.Like apes, human civilization has grown up and escaped from the control of nature: we are too large and too powerful for the jungle to resist our bulldozers and chainsaws. This passage also seems to imply that each species has a genetic nature that it cannot resist, so we will probably be helpless to stop ourselves from exhausting our natural resources unless it is also part of our nature to check ourselves. Day 9 Chapter 1:He also found it off that the information recorded by the video camera had to travel more than twenty thousand miles before returning to the display screen, only a few feet away. It was, he said later, the â€Å"world’s longest spinal cord,† and it produced an odd effect. Even at the speed of light, the transmission required a tenth of a second, and since there was a short processing time in the Houston computer, the images did not appear on the screen instantaneously, but arrived about a half a second late. –Even out of context this passage is an interesting commentary on our every day lives.Although we know that light and sounds travel at certain speeds we are used to feeling like we are immediately connected to our surroundings; however, the infinitesimal gap between our selves and our world becomes apparent through technology. This is ironic since, as in the passage quoted, technology gives us knowledge of the world we otherwise wouldn’t have. But the price of knowing more about the world is that we are also farther away from it. Discussion Director In Day 11 Chapter 2 Ross says, â€Å"People worship what they fear†¦ oping to control it.† How might this be a commentary on Congo? Congo creates a magical and mythical species of gorilla to terrorize the intrusive Westerners. Although an alternative explanation in the novel explains what is happening in the city of Zinj, Congo represents to us what we fear. However, what we are led to â€Å"worship† is not the violence of the gray gorillas but Amy’s language abilities. The possibility that animals can be equal to humans in mastering language is something we fear and make stories about in the hopes of controlling it.Day 13 Chapter 1: What does the team’s reaction to the discovery of diamonds say about the difference between humans and animals? Animals are usually thought to respond to training in a relatively mechanistic way, whereas humans are thought to possess free will. The recent defeat of the gray apes agrees with this: they could not resist the broadcast with their own will and had to obey it. However, even though the humans are in danger for their lives they pursue the blue diamonds as if they are worth more than life itself.How does Crichton’s selection of References make you f eel about the truth of the novel? The references show that there are real scientific observations and facts underpinning some of the technical aspects of the novel. On the other hand, it is clearly a novel of fiction that depends on some pretty fantastic departures from the real world for its effect and to make its points about human-animal communication. Ultimately it indicates that even scientific facts can be bent around a convincing narrative and put to the service of something that is not scientifically verifiable.

America Needs Welfare Reform Essay - 1742 Words

Today our welfare programs give out too much money and the systems need to be reformed again. In 1996 The Welfare Reform Act was enacted and it changed the entire program for the better. However, since then, the programs have become abused and need to be reformed again. Many of the people that receive state or federal funding have more luxury items than the average middle class family. The government should check-in on the families that are receiving assistance to make sure they actually need the assistance. The government should also place more stipulations on the various welfare programs in the state. There are several people all across the country that are abusing the system that was put in place to help get people survive in a time of†¦show more content†¦My mother received SNAP benefits for three months while she was unemployed in 2013, but only received $17 a month for a family of three. The most one can receive in SNAP benefits for a family of three is $497. Now that she has a stable job and can afford groceries without the help of government aid, there is no way she ever spends $497 on food. The people who receive the entire amount allotted for their family size should not receive that much. This is more than enough money for a family of three to eat very well every single day, while there are some people in the lower middle class that cannot afford to have three meals a day. My father, for example, went through a time where he made too much money to receive any type of food stamps from the government, but he could not afford to have three meals a day. When he applied for SNAP benefits, he was denied due to the fact that he made around $1,300 per month, which is not very much because he had to pay for rent, a car payment, car insurance, and the utility bills. It was difficult for him to find enough food to make dinner for two people, if I was there over the weekend. The maximum one can make in monthly gross income for a household of one person is $1,245 to be eligible for SNAP benefits (Saddler, dhs.state.il.us). In the 1920’s, after the first world war, women’s roles in society began to change because they became more independent, both in clothing and actions. They defied the well-known appropriate feminine behavior and along with those actions came new fashions. They refused to live up to any rules, whether from their husbands or their society. My decision to pursue my MBA rests on my commitment to improve myself. I am the type of person who doesn’t settle for the conventional but as much as possible, I look for ways to improve things. I believe that my acceptance for the MBA program should not only be credited for my skills that I currently posses but even more for my passion in gaining more knowledge and enhancing my skills in order for me to reach my full potential. So far, I am very proud of the three accomplishments which have instilled me with a sense of fulfillment namely being able to land my first full time job at VCS, being a core team member of business projects, and leading a team which worked for the creation of a communication tool for promotions management. I am one of those fortunate fellows who have experienced the thrill and challenge of landing a first full time job after searching for months. I can still remember how overjoyed I was when I am informed that I am hired for the position of _________ at ______________. This job opportunity has tested my patience and perseverance. The company also became the first venue for me to apply my knowledge and skills and instilled me with the values of being a good employee. Secondly, I am proud to be a core team member of the Business Objects project where members representing various departments worked hard together to reach a common goal. While we spent countless hours to test and implement the project, in the end, it is very much self-fulfilling. I value the ideas that I have learned from my colleagues as well as the good working relationship which we have established. America Through the Brush of Norman Rockwell Essay â€Å"We are all mad here,† stated the Cheshire Cat in Alice in Wonderland. He couldnt have been more correct, everyone and everything is a little messed up. Even Alice, surrounded in a make believe world of her own, knew this to be true. However, in the world Norman Rockwell chose to create, people are in love with their country, religious freedom is the norm, and children grow up perfectly. Rockwell depicts this utopia through his artwork, and the resulting snapshots of life he provides are beautiful. The moments portrayed takes the viewer through life as Norman Rockwell sees it, while avoiding the imperfections of the real world. The ideals of Freedom of Speech stretch to every corner of the United States. The Constitution claims that all people are free to speak their minds. However the voices of those who appear unintelligent, impoverished, or even simply dressed are generally looked over and buffed out. In Rockwell’s world, that is not the case. The captivating piece, Freedom of Speech, illuminates its own name. The man appears in a crowd of highly important and affluent individuals who are dressed up, while he remains in a worn jacket and flannel. His face is drawn upward, hopeful, and speaking. Those who surround him are listening, really listening. This man’s scruffy appearance is ignored and goes unnoticed while his voice touches almost everyone in the painting, creating an awe-inspiring effect which covers the crowed as well as the observer. In this piece he takes us to a place where all voices are deemed equal. Religion is a continuous war that seems to never cease; every religion believes they are correct. With true Freedom of Religion, there is no war. Rockwell transports us to a world where people are practicing their right to worship in harmony; each praying differently than their neighbor without any concern at all. Eyes are relaxed and faces are softly set. Every man and women directs their gaze intently in whichever direction they desire. Peace is etched into each face,and a feeling of contentment blankets the scene. This painting captures an arguably impossible moment, but convinces the observer that it could be real. Rockwell believes that religious freedom can be obtained and that somewhere, it existed for a moment; just long enough for him to paint. Childrens personalities are impossible to capture in a single painting. Rockwell shows us in numerous pieces how they play together while they run, skip, jump, and experience the outdoors. He also shows us how adolescence is lost in their imaginary worlds; pretty dresses and pretty girls seem to be the only thing on their minds. Underlining everything is innocence and purity. Now, walking around the playground is more barren than a cemetery. The only dates teens seem to go on are to get high or straight to the bedroom. In the numerous growing up paintings, such as, Collage of American Childhood, and, After the Prom, children are shown how they should be; carefree and simple. Rockwell removes all distraction of technology or sexual desire from his pieces, and captures the pure, rare moments of kid’s lives. Whether Rockwell’s ideas correlate with, â€Å"real-life,† America is not important; what the world saw through his eyes is just as valid. Rockwell chose to remove all the flaws of the world and focus on a few beautiful, raw moments. While Alice, stuck in her wonderland states that, â€Å"If I had a world of my own, everything would be nonsense. † Rockwell chose the opposite, nonsense free. The pieces he created help observers understand how simple life could be, and remind how nice that simplicity feels. More importantly, Norman Rockwell engrains hope into those who take the time to appreciate his work; hope that maybe these beautiful moments could wipe out the madness that underlines the world, and become reality.
